American Board of Neurological Surgery
Practice Data Information

NeuroLog
For information on using NeuroLog, the ABNS web-based program for logging practice data, please e-mail the Board at abns@tmhs.org.

The American Board of Neurological Surgery requires review and approval of at least one year of current patient practice data, plus a minimum of three months follow-up, on each patient. The Directors of the ABNS consider this review a serious and important step in the evaluation of candidates for certification.

Candidates are scheduled for oral examination, the last step in the certification process, only after their data, in conjunction with their applications, have been approved by the Board of Directors. Oral examiners are given the practice data cover sheets and reviewers’ comments.

  1. Data collection may begin anytime after the start of practice. Current data is required; the first entry cannot be more than two years old at the time of submission.

  2. Collect the data over twelve consecutive months; however, the data must contain a minimum of 100 operative cases. More time may be required to log this minimum number, in which case #1 above still applies.

  3. List all in-patients, operative and non-operative, for whom you were the responsible physician or surgeon, plus all outpatient surgeries. Exclude operative assists and consults.

  4. List all diagnostic studies of which you were aware at the time of diagnoses and re-operations, irrespective of whether you requested or performed them; for instance:
    • Angiography
    • CT scan
    • Duplex ultrasonography
    • EEG
    • EMG
    • Isotope scan
    • Lumbar puncture
    • MR scan
    • Myelography
    • PET scan
    • SPECT scan
    • TCD

  5. Use nationally standard terminology and abbreviations in your narratives.

Sufficient information must be included on each entry for the reviewer to understand and evaluate what has been done and not done. Requests from reviewers for further information on specific cases, as well as questions on procedures, should be expected. Additional data may also be required.
